This charcoal drawing depicts a "Hand of Glory", a candle made from the mummified hand of a hanged thief or murderer (bonus points if you could get the hand that did the evil deed) and wax. It would supposedly paralyze anyone who tried to do you harm, and more generally, protect you from evil-doers.

In one folktale, however, it's actually used by the thieves themselves to paralyze everyone in an inn while they slept so the thieves could rob them. In that particular tale, it only works while the Hand is lit.

My Hand keeps an eye out for you while you sleep. So thoughtful! The sigils are drawn with ‘X’s to ward off evil, as well as stars and crescent moons to invite peaceful slumber.
