HEL

Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Odin places her in charge of the realm below the roots of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, named Helheim after its queen.

There, she rules over all those who die of sickness or old age. In particular, she protects and cares for mothers and children who die in childbirth... but also condemns those who led evil lives to the freeze in the icy wastes of the realm.

She is described as having half the body of a young woman and half that of a corpse. Both sides, however, have a withering, fierce stare.
