FENRIR

Fenrir, or Fenris Wolf, as he is sometimes called, is the child of Loki and the giantess Angrboda.

Terrified of his giant size, the Norse gods trick Fenrir into allowing himself to be adorned in chains, arguing that the terrible wolf could surely break free - and that if he couldn’t, they’d unchain him. Twice, he manages to break his bonds, but by the third time the gods bring new chains, he begins to suspect foul play.

He accepts the third challenge only when his childhood companion, the god Tyr, agrees to put his hand in Fenrir’s mouth as collateral.

Just as he feared, Fenrir cannot break his new dwarf-forged chains, and the gods leave him locked away. Enraged, Fenrir bites down and takes Tyr’s hand in revenge.

He is locked away until Ragnarok, the apocalyptic last battle of the gods, during which he finally breaks his chains and devours the moon.
